About Tommy G…

Tom Giampietro (aka Tommy G) is currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, MA. He teaches the drum set studio, first year jazz improvisation theory as well as directing various jazz ensembles. Tom is not only a revered and respected educator and player but is also a lifelong mentor to many of his past and present students.

His performing experiences include recording and touring with such diverse and genre-bending artists such as Jeff Coffin, Casey Driessen, Darrell Scott, Tim O’Brien, Beegie Adair, Rod McGaha, Scott Robinson, Lee Konitz, Tom Harrell, Ricky Woodard, The Middle Tennessee Jazz Orchestra, Ben Monder, Chris Walters, Liz Johnson, Pat Bergeson, The Chris Merz X-tet, and many others.

Tom’s approach towards individual expression also informs and propels his activities as a composer. When creating new music, Giampietro writes with the individual personalities within that group as the cornerstone of his compositional process.

Giampietro hopes to always create music that encourages individual expression and fosters a true group sound while simultaneously inviting any, and all, to listen and enjoy.

In 2010, Giampietro released a collaborative jazz trio recording with Don Aliquo and Jonathan Wires. The CD, entitled "The Affinity Trio," features original modern jazz compositions by Mr. Aliquo, Mr. Wires and Mr. Giampietro. In 2013, he released his first CD as a leader: "A Faith Rewarded" by the Tom Giampietro Quartet. “A Thru-Composed Life” is his most recent release (2020 Ear Up Records).

Mr. Giampietro proudly endorses Sabian Cymbals, Remo Drumheads and Vic Firth drumsticks.
